Review:

The Pocket Rocket 2 is MSR's successor to their popular Pocket Rocket ultralight camping and travel stove.  The Pocket Rocket series of travel stoves are among the lightest in their class, with the Pocket Rocket 2 weighing in at 2.6 oz and folds down to 2" x 2" x 3" (5 cm x 5 cm x 7.6 cm) for travel.  When open, the stove measures 4.8" x 4.8" x 3.6" (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm x 9.1 cm) in size.

The Pocket Rocket 2 camping stove offers a fold-down design for pot support, allowing use of different sized pots and cookware.  Due to the small size of the camping stove, caution is recommended when using pots larger than six inches in diameter.  The Pocket Rocket 2 camping stove also provides a control valve for an adjustable flame.  The stove goes from a rolling boil to a slow simmer depending on the need.  For maximum efficiency, setting the flame at 50% (half turn) is recommended.

To setup, simply fold up the three pot supports and attach the ultralight camping stove to the fuel canister.  Then turn the control valve and ignite the flame.  The Pocket Rocket 2 does not include an igniter so an external ignition source will be needed.  When not in use, the Pocket Rocket 2 fits in a provided hard-shell carrying case to protection.

The Pocket Rocket 2 works best with the MSR IsoPro fuel canisters but are also compatible with other fuel canisters equipped with a EN 417 valve.

Pros:

  • Ultralight (2.6 oz) and compact (2" x 2" x 3")
  • Control valve to adjust flame
  • Protective case included
  • Quick and easy to set up

Cons:

  • Does not include an igniter
  • Does not include stabilizers to keep unit steady
  • High cost
